Bei der IT-seitigen Betrachtung des Themas, welche die Basis für die vorliegende Arbeit ist, zeichnet sich ein Wandel in der Betrachtungsweise von strukturierten Ablagesystemen hin zu komplexeren Lösungen ab, wobei unklar ist, welche Anforderungen an Produkte in Zukunft gestellt werden. Deshalb sollen durch diese Arbeit ausgehend von den klassischen Komponenten des Knowledge Management, bestehenden Trends und Gesprächen mit Experten Thesen aufgestellt werden, welche die Zukunft prognostizieren. Diese sollen anhand einer Studie belegt werden, an der 16 multinationale Konzerne teilgenommen haben. Diese Thesen betreffen die Entwicklung des Knowledge Management-Marktes und die zukünftigen Produktentwicklungen zur besseren Lösung der Knowledge Management-Problematik. Auf dieser Basis wird ein Produktvorschlag erarbeitet. Laut verschiedenen Studien von IDC und den Einschätzungen der untersuchten Unternehmen ist der Markt noch in der Wachstumsphase und vervielfacht sich in Zukunft. Trotzdem lassen sich schon jetzt erste Konsolidierungen wahrnehmen, die sich durch Firmenübernahmen bemerkbar machen. Das Szenario eines Knowledge EcoSystems, welches die stärkere Vernetzung von Unternehmen untereinander und mit sonstigen Einheiten, wie Expertenmarktplätze im Internet, vertikalen und horizontalen Portalen, in der Wissensgesellschaft widerspiegelt, erscheint auf Grund der Studie wahrscheinlich. Neben den Thesen lässt sich bez. der Organisationsstruktur der Unternehmen eine zunehmende Zentralisierung der Knowledge Management-Aktivitäten in eigenen Abteilungen feststellen. Die Arbeit richtet sich in erster Linie an Verantwortliche für Knowledge Management in Großkonzernen, die zum einen den Status im eigenen Unternehmen mit den geschilderten Beispielen aus anderen Unternehmen vergleichen können und damit Anregungen für zukünftige Veränderungen erhalten.
