by Robert Needham, Essays On The Languages Of The Bible And Bible Translations Classic Reprint Book available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Essays On The Languages Of The Bible And Bible Translations Classic Reprint books, Excerpt from Essays on the Languages of the Bible and Bible-Translations A few months ago I published Three Lists of Bible-Translations Actually Accomplished (Elliot Stock, 1890). By itself this book would be to some dry reading, consisting as it does merely of names and statistics: to others it would reveal the marvellous story of the Grace of God poured down in such fulness on this generation. Unquestionably it represents only a skeleton, which I propose in a series of Essays to clothe with a little flesh: this book is the first instalment. I may not live to carry out my plan to its final completeness: so I publish portions as they are ready. First comes the consideration of the Languages, in which the inspired Books were written, and of the particular vehicle of human ideas honoured by the use of the Lord of Glory during his earthly Pilgrimage. I approach the subject quite simply, and fearlessly, as a Linguist, and not as a dogmatic Theologian: if wrong in my views, I shall be glad to be set right by those who are conversant with linguistic problems ancient and modern. I doubt whether the early Fathers, who lived several centuries after the Christian Era, and were divided from the Jewish world of ideas by an abyss of prejudice, and a narrow view of things in general, were in as good a position to form a judgment as the men of this generation. Their utterances also must not be taken literally. When Jerome writes, "Sermone Graeco, quo omnis Oriens loquitur," he meant no more than the expression of a modern writer, "All the world knows French." Text Translation Theology

by Bertil Albrektson, Text Translation Theology Book available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Text Translation Theology books, Text, translation, theology - the three nouns in the title indicate the main fields of Old Testament study which are covered in this collection of essays. Text refers both to the history of biblical texts and to problems of textual criticism. Translation of the Hebrew Bible as a philological task is a central subject in several essays. Theology does not define what the essays are but what some of them are about: religious ideologies are objects of enquiry. Bertil Albrektson gathers together a selection of his essays, some of which have become classics, which were written on separate occasions and published in different, sometimes rather remote, places. They cover more than four decades of research, and for the first time they are now brought together in this accessible volume. Bertil Albrektson is a Swedish Old Testament scholar of international repute, awarded the Burkitt Medal for Biblical Studies by The British Academy in 2003. His writing was characterized by the late Professor P.R. Ackroyd of King's College, London, as 'a model of learning, clarity and dry humour'. This volume offers a unique resource to current scholars of biblical studies.

The Interpretation Of The Bible

by Joze Krasovec, The Interpretation Of The Bible Book available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Interpretation Of The Bible books, This unique volume, nearly 2000 pages in length and handsomely printed on Bible paper, is perhaps the most comprehensive scholarly work of our time on the translation and interpretation of the Bible. At its core are papers presented to an international symposium in Ljubljana in September 1996 to mark the publication of the new Slovenian version of the Bible, a landmark in Slovene identity and cultural life. In addition, its distinguished editor, Joze Krasovec, has commissioned a wide range of contributions devoted to translations of the Bible in many languages, including the Slavonic languages, Croatian, Czech, Hungarian, Polish and the Scandinavian languages. The 82 chapters in this work, mostly in English, are divided into three parts. Part I, on ancient translations and hermeneutics of the Bible, contains contributions by M.-E. Boismard, S.P. Brock, K.J. Cathcart, R.P. Gordon, L.J. Grech, M. Hengel, O. Keel, J. Lust, E. Tov and others, with a notable comprehensive bibliographic survey of oriental Bible translations from the first millennium by M. van Esbroeck. Part II, on Slavonic and other translations of the Bible, includes the first detailed study of the history of the Slavonic Bible, by Francis J. Thomson (over 300 pp.). Part III, with essays by such scholars as J.H. Charlesworth, D.J.A. Clines, J. Gnilka, M. G÷rg, N. Lohfink and A.C. Thiselton, concerns the interpretation of the Bible in translation, philosophy, theology, art and music. In an appendix, a complete list of printed Bibles in languages throughout the world is presented for the first time.
