My Silent War

My Silent War by Kim Philby, My Silent War Book available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download My Silent War books, In the annals of espionage, one name towers above all others: that of H. A. R. "Kim" Philby, the ringleader of the legendary Cambridge spies. A member of the British establishment, Philby joined the Secret Intelligence Service in 1940, rose to the head of Soviet counterintelligence, and, as M16's liaison with the CIA and the FBI, betrayed every secret of Allied operations to the Russians, fatally compromising covert actions to roll back the Iron Curtain in the early years of the Cold War. Written from Moscow in 1967, My Silent War shook the world and introduced a new archetype in fiction: the unrepentant spy. It inspired John Le Carre's Smiley novels and the later espionage novels of Graham Greene. Kim Philby was history's most successful spy. He was also an exceptional writer who gave us the great iconic story of the Cold War and revolutionized, in the process, the art of espionage writing.

Book Description:

The Silent War

My Silent War by John Pina Craven, The Silent War Book available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Silent War books, The Cold War was the first major conflict between superpowers in which victory and defeat were unambiguously determined without the firing of a shot. Without the shield of a strong, silent deterrent or the intellectual sword of espionage beneath the sea, that war could not have been won. John P. Craven was a key figure in the Cold War beneath the sea. As chief scientist of the Navy's Special Projects Office, which supervised the Polaris missile system, then later as head of the Deep Submergence Systems Project (DSSP) and the Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle program (DSRV), both of which engaged in a variety of clandestine undersea projects, he was intimately involved with planning and executing America's submarine-based nuclear deterrence and submarine-based espionage activities during the height of the Cold War. Craven was considered so important by the Soviets that they assigned a full-time KGB agent to spy on him. Some of Craven's highly classified activities have been mentioned in such books as Blind Man's Bluff, but now he gives us his own insights into the deadly cat-and-mouse game that U.S. and Soviet forces played deep in the world's oceans. Craven tells riveting stories about the most treacherous years of the Cold War. In 1956 Nautilus, the world's first nuclear-powered submarine and the backbone of the Polaris ballistic missile system, was only days or even hours from sinking due to structural damage of unknown origin. Craven led a team of experts to diagnose the structural flaw that could have sent the sub to the bottom of the ocean, taking the Navy's missile program with it. Craven offers insight into the rivalry between the advocates of deterrence (with whom he sided) and those military men and scientists, such as Edward Teller, who believed that the United States had to prepare to fight and win a nuclear conflict with the Soviet Union. He describes the argument that raged in the Navy over the reasons for the tragic loss of the submarine Thresher, and tells the astonishing story of the hunt for the rogue Soviet sub that became the model for The Hunt for Red October -- including the amazing discovery the Navy made when it eventually found the sunken sub. Craven takes readers inside the highly secret DSSP and DSRV programs, both of which offered crucial cover for sophisticated intelligence operations. Both programs performed important salvage operations in addition to their secret espionage activities, notably the recovery of a nuclear bomb off Palomares, Spain. He describes how the Navy's success at deep-sea recovery operations led to the takeover of the entire program by the CIA during the Nixon administration. A compelling tale of intrigue, both within our own government and between the U.S. and Soviet navies, The Silent War is an enthralling insider's account of how the submarine service kept the peace during the dangerous days of the Cold War.

It’s 1953 and the ‘Canal Zone’, a strip of land vital to Britain’s access to transport, fuel and trade, is being put under pressure by local military forces. Hundreds of thousands of British troops are sent to defend our interests in Egypt, and their casualty levels suppressed. Reluctant ex-RAF radio operator Charlie Bassett finds his services are required for Queen and country again. Before he knows it he’s been drafted – and he’s not quite certain for what. Sent for weapons training and practice parachute jumps, the only thing that keeps him going are the bevy of beautiful women he encounters along the way . . . After a hair raising journey via Malta and Cyprus – neither welcoming an extra British serviceman - Egypt, initially, seems far from being the land of pleasure and excitement that he’d hoped for. Then a face from the past comes back into his life – bringing nothing but trouble with her. Under fire, from both friend and foe, Charlie’s sense of adventure is awakened once more as he discovers that Egypt is a land of opportunity for the enterprising mind – and Charlie is nothing if not enterprising . . .

My Silent War by Wayne Patrick, The Silent War Book available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Silent War books, Charlie McShane’s world has just collapsed. His parents, John and Mary, are killed in a head-on collision with a drunk driver. Worse, the driver is an illegal alien from Mexico. To keep himself from destitution, Charlie moves back into his parents’ home in Arizona. And it is then that the silent war begins. Already suffering from mental illness, Charlie is pushed to the brink his parents’ death. His passive racism suddenly roars to full-blown hatred, engulfing friends, neighborhood strays, and the unfortunate Mexican population. As schizophrenia seizes Charlie’s mind, virtually no one is safe from Charlie’s wrath. He is now in an undeclared and very personal war of perverted justice and revenge. Charlie embarks on a random killing spree and especially targets the Mexican population. Fear and terrorism grip Arizona, and despite the efforts of law enforcement, there is no end in sight until one valiant man determines to stop Charlie, no matter the cost ... Gripping and timely, The Silent War mixes current political issues with the horrors of mental illness to paint a disturbing picture of misguided vengeance and racism.

My Silent War by Victor Pemberton, The Silent War Book available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Silent War books, When tragedy strikes, will she ever find happiness again? A young girl battles against adversity in The Silent War, a moving saga by popular author Victor Pemberton. Perfect for fans of Harry Bowling and Cathy Sharp. Sunday Collins is less than happy with her lot in war-torn London, working in the sweaty, steamy laundry round the corner from her home in a stark Holloway council flat known as 'the buildings' where she has been brought up by May Collins, a Salvation Army Officer who found her on the Sally Army steps along with her bossy sister Louie. Sunday lives for Saturday nights, when she makes the most of her Betty Grable looks at the Athenaeum Dance Hall. But Sunday's recklessly lived life is changed dramatically when, one summer morning in 1944, the laundry receives a direct hit from one of Hitler's V-1s, and she finds she is - and it seems permanently - deaf... What readers are saying about The Silent War: 'I ran through the pages as I became more and more immersed and felt unable to put the book down' 'Mr Pemberton is a great writer who is able to make the reader feel like they are truly in North London during the war' 'Takes you back in time and makes you feel part of the story'
